Welded Mesh Rolls & Panels

Welded Wire Mesh

Welded wire mesh is a grid of steel wires electrically welded at every intersection, forming square or rectangular openings that hold their shape when cut. It is supplied in rolls or flat panels.

What is welded wire mesh?

Welded wire mesh is made by laying straight line wires and cross wires in a grid and resistance-welding every crossing point. Because each joint is fixed, the mesh keeps its openings even when it is cut to size, which makes it easy to fabricate into cages, guards and partitions.

Light mesh with 0.6–2.5 mm wire is supplied in rolls for fencing, animal enclosures and construction. Heavier wire from 2 mm to 6 mm is made into flat panels for guards, shelving and building works.

The finish depends on use: galvanized after welding gives the best corrosion protection at the joints, galvanized before welding is more economical, and PVC coating adds colour and extra protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between galvanized before and after welding?

Galvanized after welding coats the welded joints as well, giving better corrosion protection. Galvanized before welding uses pre-coated wire and is more economical for indoor or light use.

How is the mesh opening measured?

Mesh opening is usually given as the distance between wire centres, in inches or millimetres. For example, 1/2" mesh means wires spaced 12.7 mm apart.

What is BWG?

BWG (Birmingham Wire Gauge) is a traditional wire size system. A higher number means a thinner wire; BWG 19 is about 1.0 mm. Please also state the size in millimetres when ordering.

Can you supply stainless steel welded mesh?

Yes. Welded mesh can be made from 304 or 316 stainless steel wire for food, chemical and marine uses.

What is the difference between rolls and panels?

Rolls use lighter wire and are flexible enough to roll up for long runs. Panels use heavier wire, stay flat and rigid, and are cut to fixed sizes.

What information do you need for a quotation?

Mesh opening, wire diameter, roll width and length or panel size, finish, quantity, and the destination port.
