Stainless Steel Security Mesh

Security Screen Mesh

Security screen mesh, also known as stainless steel security mesh or King Kong mesh, is a heavy plain-weave stainless steel mesh with a powder-coated finish, used in security doors and windows to resist forced entry while letting in air and light and keeping insects out.

What is security screen mesh?

Security screen mesh is woven from thick stainless steel wire in a plain weave and then powder coated. At 11 mesh with 0.8 mm wire, the openings are about 1.5 mm: small enough to keep out insects, while the heavy wire resists cutting, pushing and prying.

Door and window makers fix the mesh into aluminium frames to build security screens. How well a finished screen resists attack depends on the whole system, including the mesh, frame, retention method and locks, so the mesh is chosen together with the frame design.

304 stainless steel suits most inland locations. 316 contains molybdenum and resists salt better near the coast. The powder coating gives an even black or grey finish that reduces glare, so the mesh is easier to see through.

11 mesh × 0.8 mm security mesh: 2.31 mm wire spacing and about 1.5 mm openings. Right: 0.8, 0.9 and 1.0 mm wire on 11 mesh at the same scale. Thicker wire is stronger; thinner wire gives more airflow and light.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between security screen mesh and insect screen?

Insect screen uses fine wire or yarn of about 0.2–0.3 mm and only keeps out insects. Security mesh uses stainless steel wire of about 0.8–1.0 mm, which resists cutting and pushing while still keeping insects out.

Should I choose 304 or 316 stainless steel?

304 suits most inland areas. 316 contains molybdenum and resists salt better, so it is recommended near the coast and around swimming pools.

What wire diameter do I need?

0.8 mm is the most common. 0.9 mm and 1.0 mm wire give extra strength for doors and high-risk openings, with slightly less visibility and airflow.

Why is the mesh powder coated?

Powder coating gives an even colour, reduces glare so the mesh is easier to see through, and adds a protective layer. Black is the most popular colour.

Does the mesh alone make a security screen?

No. A finished screen's performance also depends on the frame, how the mesh is held in it, the locks and the installation. We supply the mesh to security door and window makers.

Square hole or round hole?

Both are the same stainless steel mesh with a different powder coating finish, and we supply both. Read our guide: Square-Hole vs Round-Hole Security Screen Mesh.

What information do you need for a quotation?

Stainless steel grade, mesh count, wire diameter, colour, hole finish (square or round), roll width or sheet size, quantity, and the destination port.
