Hexagonal Wire Mesh

Gabion Mesh Roll

Gabion mesh roll, also known as double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh, is a woven steel mesh in which pairs of wires are twisted together to form hexagonal openings, supplied in rolls for gabion fabrication, slope protection and erosion control.

What is gabion mesh?

Gabion mesh is woven by twisting pairs of steel wires together one and a half turns, then separating them to form hexagonal openings. The double twist stops the mesh from unravelling if a single wire is cut, and lets it flex with ground movement without losing strength.

The mesh is supplied in rolls and cut on site or in the factory to make gabion baskets and mattresses, or laid directly over slopes and rock faces. Mesh size is given as D × L: D is the distance between two parallel twists, L is the length of the opening.

Wire is protected by heavy galvanizing, zinc-aluminium alloy (Galfan) for longer life, or an extra PVC coating for water and aggressive soils.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does 80 × 100 mesh mean?

80 mm is the distance D between two parallel twists, and 100 mm is the length L of the hexagonal opening. 80 × 100 is the most common size for gabions.

Why is the mesh double-twisted?

The double twist locks the wires together, so the mesh does not unravel if one wire is cut, and it can flex with ground movement.

Which coating should I choose?

Heavy galvanizing suits normal soil and fresh water. Galfan zinc-aluminium alloy lasts longer in harsh conditions. PVC coating adds protection for sea water, polluted water and aggressive soils.

How is PVC-coated wire measured?

Two sizes are given: the metal core diameter and the overall diameter including PVC. For example, 2.7 / 3.7 mm means a 2.7 mm core with PVC coating.

Can you supply selvedge and lacing wire?

Yes. We supply selvedge wire for the mesh edges and lacing wire in coils, in the same coating as the mesh.

What information do you need for a quotation?

Mesh size, mesh wire diameter, coating, roll width and length, total area or number of rolls, and the destination port.
